“When we were first looking for a PLM solution, older traditional PLM systems seemed stuck in the past. Then we found Propel and saw that the company was built on Salesforce. Salesforce was a big deciding factor for us because we believe it will really benefit us.”
Owl Cameras is best known for creating the Owl Car Cam, a security camera for cars. Thanks to online sales and the ever-growing interest in tech and personal security, they are selling products and scaling at an impressive rate. With all the connectivity and innovation behind their flagship product, the team in Owl needed a scalable solution to manage their product lifecycle.
Owl was managing their product lifecycle through spreadsheets, shared DropBox folders and Jira. But in order to grow the team, they needed an all in one PLM solution that kept them efficient and would grow with them as they scaled. It was clear that using spreadsheets for product lifecycle management (PLM) was not going to cut it as Owl continued to grow.THE CHALLENGE
“After we launched the product we really started to think about scaling our engineering efforts and how the timing was right to find a solution that would grow with us,” said Yan Karasik, Head of Quality & Technical Operations at Owl Cameras.
As it stands, Owl’s product and protocol require a lot of changes and updates, and they have a strict process to control every working part of their product lifecycle. The Owl Car Cam’s internal complexity requires custom fields and change approvals. At any given time, Owl has roughly between 20-30 team members working on the product, and with all that complexity, they needed full control over the product development process.THE SOLUTION
Since implementing Propel, Owl is managing all pertinent product information and data in one platform. Bill of materials, part numbers for different software, hardware, packaging, SKUs and more are being tracked from concept to customer inside Owl’s Propel instance.
And communicating to their third-party vendors, specifically their contract manufacturer has gotten a lot easier thanks to Propel’s supplier portal. With Propel, Owl’s vendors can access custom created portals and with that, they only have access to certain vendor-specific information.
“Flexibility, the ability to add fields, and change things were personally the biggest things for me and Propel gives us all of that,” said Yan Karasik.
Stronger Communication: Owl can now manage all pertinent product information and data in one platform. Bill of materials, part numbers for different software, hardware, packaging, SKUs and more are being tracked from concept to customer inside Owl’s Propel instance.
Better Collaboration: Propel helps Owl keep every piece of the business in one platform, but it also allows them to stay up to date on the latest product changes and training records. Owl will be able to update their entire organization on new product releases, software upgrades, engineering change orders, updated costing, and more.
Easier to Train: Once each team aligned on the processes, they kept it relatively simple when it came to training employees. “When we went live with Propel we did on the job training. It was intuitive enough for people to do it on their own. Some team members did things by themselves after the first initial training,” said Karasik.
